I want to take this opportunity to share some exciting news about what’s happening in the Hear Her Voice | Hear His Voice (HHV) community and introduce you to a few amazing members of our team!
TRAUMA SUPPORT GROUPS
If you weren’t already aware, HHV hosts monthly men’s and women’s trauma support groups, and they are completely FREE to join!
We created these spaces because you shouldn’t have to navigate your healing journey alone. Our groups provide a safe environment where we can:
- Unpack trauma
- Heal from past pain
- Learn healthy ways to communicate
- Build emotional awareness
- Encourage one another
- Grow together in healing, unity, sisterhood, and brotherhood
Our trauma sessions include educational materials, grounding techniques, positive affirmations, open dialogue, and group discussion.

Meet Gia aka G The Voice
I was introduced to Hear Her Voice when Nairobi, the founder, reached out to me after recognizing that our passions and purposes aligned. Although women’s advocacy and trauma healing are passions I’ve discovered more recently, I’ve also found the voice and encouragement to speak up, share my perspective, and advocate for the things I believe in. This journey has taught me the importance of becoming unapologetically HER—embracing who you are, finding your voice, and giving yourself permission to grow.
Being part of a trauma support group is meaningful to me because it allows me to continue healing from my own experiences while encouraging other women to take that first step toward healing. I believe having a safe space to be heard, supported, and reminded that you are not alone can make a powerful difference.
I’m an encouraging and compassionate person who has recently learned to become more outspoken about the things that matter to me. I recognize that everyone is going through something, and that understanding has taught me the importance of leading with compassion and grace.
Outside of Hear Her Voice, I enjoy reading women’s empowerment books, writing about my personal story and experiences, and spending time with friends and family—especially when it involves laughter and genuine connection.
I’m grateful to be part of Hear Her Voice and look forward to growing, healing, and finding my voice alongside other women. We don’t have to heal alone.
Meet Dani Abdullah
Dani Abdullah is a New Afrikan socialist from Indianapolis, IN. She is a trauma therapist, wife and mother, and animal lover. In her free time, she is a nature enthusiast and herbalist.
Dani was introduced to Hear Her Voice through the founder, Nairobi, in 2024 during a visit to the Indy Liberation Center where Dani is a volunteer. Dani was drawn to the program’s vision and promotion of collective strength to gain unity and healing in support of incarcerated individuals. Dani wants to help incarcerated women who are most overlooked in the discussion of prison reform.
Meet Telly Kingcade
Telly Kingcade is a proud member and group facilitator with Hear His Voice, a community advocate, and a professional barber dedicated to giving back and uplifting others. As a father of three, Telly understands the importance of family and the importance of healing from trauma.
Telly brings lived experience, authenticity, and compassion to the Hear His Voice community. When he’s not working or serving his community, he enjoys playing pool and darts, reading, playing chess, and giving back to those around him.
Meet Khalid Karim
Khalid Karim is a longtime member and group facilitator with Hear His Voice, having been part of the HHV family since the beginning. Khalid brings lived experience, compassion, and a genuine commitment to healing and growth to the work he does in his community.
Khalid is a passionate youth advocate and mentor and the founder of Lessons K Learned, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and empowering young people. He is also a member of Ketchmore Kids and partners with the Goode Fight Youth Mentoring Program in the DMV area.
Khalid is the author of I Was Just Thinking and Still Thinking, books of poetry, and a contributing author to the HHV Recovery Workbook and A Voice of Youth Workbook. When he’s not writing poetry, Khalid enjoys giving back to his community—but most of all, mentoring and pouring into the next generation.
Meet Leon Benson
Leon Benson is the Director of the Solitary Justice Project, a dedicated community organizer, and a lived-experience professional based in the Detroit area. Bridging frontline advocacy and clinical care, he serves as a trauma-informed re-entry specialist, peer recovery coach, and clinical peer support specialist committed to mentorship and restorative justice.
Beyond his clinical and organizing work, Leon is the published author of Letter of Gratitudes: I Am Because We Are and a critically acclaimed hip-hop recording artist. An integral element of his practice is the therapeutic use of the arts, integrating music, poetry, drawing, and painting as vital instruments for trauma processing, emotional resilience, and personal accountability.
Through his leadership, targeted workshops, and community-driven initiatives, Leon works to guide individuals through complex life transitions, dismantle barriers to reintegration, support holistic recovery, and amplify marginalized voices.
We are grateful for each of them and everything they bring to our community.

LISTENING EAR INITIATIVE
Hear Her Voice is also in the process of launching our Listening Ear Initiative, an expansion of our Self-Help Line.
This initiative is specifically designed to support our “Behind the Walls” community by providing a listening ear, hope, encouragement, compassion, and human connection to individuals who are incarcerated.
We believe this initiative can have a tremendous impact, and we want to make sure we are prepared to meet the need.
We are currently seeking 10 volunteers who are willing to lend their time, their ears, and their hearts to this important work.
Sometimes people don’t need someone to fix everything.
Sometimes they just need a listening ear.
